Common myths about vision can lead to unnecessary worry or improper eye care.
Common myths about vision can lead to unnecessary worry or improper eye care.

Every day, patients come to me with doubts like —
“Are glasses making my eyes weaker?”
“Can eyedrops reduce my eye power?"
“Should my child really wear specs so young?”

Let’s clear the fog. Here are 7 common myths that many people believe and the facts behind them.

👓Myth 1: Wearing glasses will weaken your eyes.

Truth: Glasses aren’t making your eyes lazy — they are just helping you see clearly.
Your power may change naturally due to age, growth, or conditions like myopia. But glasses don’t cause that change — they correct what’s already there.

Wearing the right prescription = clear, comfy vision.
Wearing the
wrong one = eye strain, headache and confusion.
Wearing
nothing when you actually need them? = more strain, especially in children whose visual system is still developing.

Wearing glasses doesn’t weaken your eyes. Not wearing them when needed might do more harm.

🧬 Myth 2: If parents have good eyesight, kids won’t have problems.

✅Truth: Genetics do play a role, but environmental factors like screen exposure, reading habits, and time spent outdoors are equally important, especially in cases of childhood myopia.

👁️ Myth 3: Eye twitching means something bad is about to happen.

✅ Truth: It’s just fatigue, stress, or caffeine overload — not divine messaging or brain doom.
Eye twitching (myokymia) is super common and mostly harmless. It’s usually caused by:

  • Lack of sleep

  • Eye strain from screens

  • Stress or anxiety

  • Too much coffee or tea

No bad luck. No secret admirer. Just your eye saying, “Hey, maybe take a break?”

💻 Myth 4: Blue light glasses fix all screen-related eye problems.

✅ Truth: They’re overhyped. The main issue isn’t blue light — it’s too much screen time without breaks.

(Digital eye strain is real, but blue light isn’t the main villain.)

🧠 Myth 5: Eyes can be transplanted to restore vision.

✅ Truth: We can’t transplant an entire eyeball to restore sight — not yet.
Why? Because the
optic nerve, which connects your eye to your brain, has over 1 million tiny nerve fibers — and once cut, they can’t be reconnected.

No optic nerve = no signal to the brain = no vision.

What can be done
Cornea (clear front layer of your eye) can be transplanted to restore vision when it’s damaged.

But here’s the catch:
A corneal transplant won’t restore vision if the retina or optic nerve is damaged.
Those deeper structures are where the magic of vision really happens!

🔬 Myth 6: A cataract must be ‘ripe’ before it is removed.

✅ Truth: Earlier, surgeons used to wait until the cataract was fully developed so it was easier to remove in one piece, since tools were limited and there were no foldable lenses. So, people used to think you had to wait until cataracts got “mature” or “ripe” before it could be removed. Over time, this “wait until ripe” advice passed from generation to generation, especially in communities with limited access to modern care.

But thanks to modern advances in cataract surgery, now cataract can be removed as soon as it compromises your vision. The lens can now be removed from the eye as soon as it’s cloudy enough to make reading fine print or street signs difficult.

📚 Myth 7: Learning disabilities are caused by eye problems.

✅ Truth: A child with a learning disability (LD) can have perfect 6/6 vision — because the issue isn’t with the eyes, but with how the brain processes information. Conditions like dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia are neurological, not visual.

However, It can also work the other way around. A child struggling to read or concentrate might actually have an undiagnosed vision issue, not a learning disorder. So before labelling a child with LD, it’s important to get a comprehensive eye exam.
